Ceci n’est pas sous-titrée!

February 28, 2009

So I watched the first Belgian semi-classic this morning on some obscure French feed. I’m not sure if it was a joke or an allusion or anything, but, at the bottom of the screen, it said “C’est emission n’est pas sous-titrée” (this program is not subtitled), which I couldn’t help but laugh at, as that was announced via subtitle!

In other news, no, I’m not in Kentucky. I really wanted to hit the first MWCCC races of the season, but, after that killer move on Thursday, I’m still aching all over. I didn’t think a seven-hour drive each way, not getting enough sleep while there, and then racing the super aggressive conference was really the best recipe for recovery.

Besides, I’ve got training camps March 6th-14th and 20th-29th this month (with some races interspersed). Don’t worry, you’ll see the tricked-out Lelli on the road soon enough (and I better see some tricked-out powerfiles otherwise I’ll be driving that Lelli behind the peloton every weekend)!

Famous, Again

February 27, 2009

NPR made me [feel] famous again when they posted my “photo of the recession” last weekend and linked it up with one of the Planet Money blog posts this week: Responsible Renters.

The PM team is also taking over This American Life this weekend (for the third time). You may remember its great episodes last May and September, “The Giant Pool of Money” and “Another Frightening Hour on the Economy”, explaining the subprime mortgage crisis and the credit crunch, respectively. Want to actually enjoy an hour learning about what’s actually going on out there (instead of sucking in political rhetoric)? Tune in to This American Life on public radio this weekend or download the episode in the free podcast Sunday night/Monday morning.

Moving Madness

February 26, 2009

Two people, two apartments, one small U-Haul, seemingly endless suffering…and all in six hours, with just enough time to spare for a three-hour class afterward. I. Am. Beat.

It’s True!

February 25, 2009

Apparently, Auden really liked to be cozy: “A version of him figures as Nigel Strangeways in the detective novels, which Cecil Day-Lewis wrote as Nicholas Blake. Like Auden, Strangeways prefers to sleep under vast piles of blankets to remind him of being underground. When staying with friends, Auden himself would occasionally pile the curtains or even a stair carpet or framed picture onto his bed.”

I, in strange fashion, have begun to found the library stairwell nice and quite and cozy. In between the shelves themselves? Still too noisy….

Safari 4.0

February 24, 2009

Maybe refreshing NYTimes.com one nanosecond faster isn’t your highest priority, but I was stoked to find Apple released Safari 4.0 today! As far as I can tell, it’s just as fast as Firefox 3, even after the ultimate test of putting it through watchthesimpsonsonline.com.

This is something I wasn’t expecting to see until Snow Leopard (Mac OS 10.6), coming out [boy I hope] around WWDC time this summer? So quite a pleasant surprise this Tuesday noon!

Now, I do concede that, visually, it is a pretty big Google Chrome-ripoff. Then again, Google Chrome has been dragging its feet for a half-year now after releasing the browser for Windows and never even sending its email list an update on its Chrome for Mac process in the meantime. So I don’t feel bad supporting Apple’s picking up the slack. I do wonder what Google is going to say about this though….
