Always Forget Something

August 6, 2009

I was a genius and forgot to bring anything warm to Minnesota. To Minnesota Am I crazy? For all I know, the temperature is going to drop forty degrees right now, hail will come screaming down, and a twister will follow. Then again, I may have lucked out, because look at all the weather forecaster seems to know:

Seems to know being the operative phrase, I suppose. Did I just jinx myself? Well, good thing I don’t believe in superstition. Anyway, loving the weather and the roads out here. They all seem smoother and easier since the last time I was back. I think those are telling signs that, 1) I really do need to get out of Chicago, and 2) I must actually (I hope) be stronger than I was in high school.

Yes, except for Main Street Hill in my hometown. That’s still as hard as ever. I checked that out—the finishing circuit climb for Nature Valley’s queen stage—and it was still crazy hard. It’s really steep, then it gets steeper. And steeper. Ouch. It’ll be hard to make myself do that four times over (after 80 windy miles already) when I do the whole route on Saturday. (And, yes, I know I just said “hard” about million times in the same paragraph. Give me a break, I’m tired!)

The bunch sprint – Chicago cyclists confined to bumpy roads, messy sprints, too much traffic, and drama up the wazoo.

Monday Mix Tape

July 31, 2009

All right, I know it has been YouTube clip week on this blog, and I also know it’s Friday (not Monday), but some days it really helps to watch this scene over again. I’ve definitely been each character in this bit multiple times before.

This movie is also pretty cathartic at times. At other times it just kills me because all that catharsis is completely negated by the ending. I guess it is John Cusack so I should expect it, but, come on! How could this not end in depression?

Also, skate dorks at Milwaukee and Honore (record store location in the movie) have now been replaced, not even a decade later, by Urban Outfitters goers.

Certain People I Know

July 9, 2009

Bob Nanna (Braid, Hey Mercedes, The City On Film) is back and has recorded again. Yes, yes, yes! Go to certainpeopleiknow.com to listen and/or download. “All You Gotta Do Is Show” is my favorite song out of the four. Can’t wait for a full-length!

You may remember I grabbed the set list from their second show at the Beat Kitchen earlier this year (the first one in Urbana I missed unfortunately):

Oh, and for those interested in the classics, here are some vids from Nanna’s previous three bands. First, “The New Nathan Detroits” from Braid (1999), second “Bells” from Hey Mercedes (2001, and that show was with The Anniversary and Dashboard Confessional—weird!), and finally “For Holly” (acoustic) from The City On Film (2007). Also found an interesting description on some Braid video online about how Braid, Promise Ring, Rainer Maria, and other early emo goers are still playing here and there for free or cheap in some form or another, while Jimmy Eat World, Death Cab, and Dashboard are on the OC. Yeah…. Strange. Anyway, here we go:

Oh man, lyrics to “Bells” are sooooooo good!
